Explorations in Gelatin printing, with the layering of colour, shapes, line and texture to create graphic-like designs, have influenced my recent artworks. Gelatin printing is fast moving, where artistic decisions are made on the fly – so much so that the end result is part deliberate action and part happy accident. Rather than chaotic though, I find the whole process almost meditative, particularly when I’m creating small projects, such as my one-of-a-kind original gelatin print cards.
Working larger is a challenge. Sometimes the piece might begin as a gelatin print (one-of-a-kind, never mass produced), but is then further developed by painting on top with acrylics. In the end, the original print is often completely unrecognizable, yet the painting retains that graphic-like quality of a gelatin print.
I have begun further explorations of shape and colour, painting with acrylics on canvas on a much larger scale, creating loosely stylized forms of leaves or plants, or even of only their shadows, as my subject.
My work has been exhibited in the Sisnett Gallery (Halton Hills, Ontario), at the town hall in Halton Hills , and at Norval Studios & Gallery.
